Kolkata: The Catalan giants continued their remarkable start to the season with a routine 3-0 win at Spotify Camp Nou on Saturday, with goals from Anthony Gordon, Gabriel Jesus and Jules Koundé seeing off a battling Getafe. Having returned from the international break, Barcelona did not lose any of their momentum and played with confidence and conviction to leave the visitors with plenty to ponder.
Gordon Makes an Immediate Impact. Barcelona could not have asked for a better start to the match. In the second minute, Anthony Gordon fired in a wonderful strike from outside the penalty area to open the scoring. The hosts burst out of the traps and made it hard for Getafe to settle, and the opening goal only added to the feeling of control that was building in the Barcelona ranks.
Lamine Yamal continued to pose a real threat on the right flank, and the hosts cut the opponents’ defence apart with some wonderful interplay and movement. Getafe tried their best to stay compact, but it proved extremely hard to deal with the pressure from their hosts. David Soria was forced into early action as Barcelona continued to look to extend their lead.
Gabriel Jesus Doubles the Advantage. Barcelona’s pressure told in the 30th minute when Gabriel Jesus tucked the ball into the back of the net to make it 2-0. The Brazilian forward made the most of his opportunity, and his goal gave him a real confidence boost as he looks to become a regular in the starting line-up. With a glut of games on the horizon, Hansi Flick will be delighted with the goalscorer’s impact.
Getafe did have their moments, but they were struggling to make an impact despite their best efforts. Having reached half-time with a two-goal advantage, Barcelona were in complete command.
Koundé Puts the Result Beyond Doubt. Following the break, Barcelona made it hard for their opponents to breathe. Rather than allow Getafe to settle, the Catalans continued to press and look to increase their lead.
Their persistence was rewarded in the 73rd minute when Jules Koundé fired in a stunning goal to make it 3-0. With the result no longer in any doubt, the hosts eased off slightly in the closing stages. They still had plenty of the ball and kept their opponents at arm’s length, ensuring that there was nothing for Getafe to take heart from.
While the goals may have grabbed the headlines, Barcelona’s display was built upon a solid foundation of positive play. They pressed with intensity, moved the ball with sharp short passes and combined their high pressing with excellent counter-attacking flair.
Lamine Yamal remained a constant threat on the right, Gordon had the perfect start to his Blaugrana career and Jesus took his goal well. Koundé played his part in a well-rounded display, and Flick will also be delighted with how his defenders handled their opposition.
They did not give Getafe much to work with, and despite the visitors’ best efforts, they could not make an impact on the game. For Getafe, it was a frustrating afternoon as they struggled to cope with the pressure from their hosts.
They will need to produce a much better performance if they are to get back to winning ways.
Barcelona’s 3-0 win over Getafe was a composed and controlled display from the Catalan giants. They got off to a lightning start, extended their lead through a well-taken goal from Gabriel Jesus and wrapped up the victory with a stunning strike from Jules Koundé.
With eight wins from their opening eight La Liga fixtures, Barcelona find themselves top of the table. While they will face sterner tests as the season progresses, Flick will take huge encouragement from his side’s 100% start to the season.
