Samir Banerjee clinches Wimbledon boy's singles title

London: Indian-American Samir Banerjee surprised everyone to clinch the Wimbledon boy’s singles title defeating Victor Lilov at the All England Club on Sunday. The 17-year-old won 7-5, 6-3 to become the first American junior champion at Wimbledon since Reilly Opelka in 2015, and 12th overall.

What makes Banerjee’s triumph more special is the fact he was unseeded at the start of the tournament. But his performance progressed as the tournament went on surprising many to earn him the tag of one of the stars for the future. Banerjee, who is of Bengali origin currently lives in New Jersey in the USA.

He also became the second Kolkata origin star to win the Wimbledon junior title after legendary Leander Paes in 1990. Earlier, he defeated Sascha Gueymard Wayenburg in the semis.
