Kolkata Knight Riders CEO Venky Mysore slams IPL governing council’s rule change

Kolkata : Kolkata Knight Riders CEO Venky Mysore expressed his disappointment over IPL governing council’s decision to allow 120 minutes’ extra time for the remainder of the IPL 2025 league matches as “ad hoc” and “inconsistent“.

This new rule was added on May 20, 2025. Since it’s monsoon in India, the additional 120 minutes will be instrumental in avoiding game being washed out in case of rain.

However, in the opening game of IPL restart at Chinnaswamy between RCB and KKR, where the purple army’s playoffs hopes were at stake, it was a washout, eliminating KKR from IPL 2025. As per Mysore, the additional time implementation could have allowed atleast 5 overs of game, but such wasn’t implemented as at that time, this rule wasn’t there.

When the IPL restarted, it was clear that the first game — RCB vs KKR — was at high risk of being interrupted due to rain,” Mysore reportedly said in an email. “The forecast was there for all to see. The match was washed out, and the additional 120 minutes now being applied might have allowed at least a five-over game.”

Under the earlier rules, league matches had a one-hour extension window. The change now brings league matches in line with the playoffs, which already had a two-hour buffer. Mysore argued that such provisions should have been introduced uniformly from the moment the tournament resumed.

These mid-season changes may be necessary under the circumstances,” he added, “but one would have expected more consistency. The washout ended KKR’s playoff chances. I’m sure you understand why we feel aggrieved.”

KKR and RCB shared points after rain forced a no-result in Bengaluru.

Overs started to be lost from 8.30pm and, while the cut-off time was 10.56pm, the match was called off at 10.26pm as the drizzle never ceased. This resulted in defending champion KKR’s elimination.

The wash-out ended KKR’s chances of making the playoffs. Such ad hoc decision and inconsistencies of applying them are not appropriate for a tournament of this standing. I am sure you also understand why we feel aggrieved”, he concluded.
