Kochi: Kerala Blasters announced the signing of Spanish striker Alvaro Vásquez from Sporting de Gijon till May 31, 2022, on Tuesday ahead of their preparations for the eighth edition of the Indian Super League.

“This is a new stage of my career and I am looking forward to embracing the football and culture of India, something which I have heard a lot about. I will do my best both on and off the field for the team,” said Vázquez after penning down the deal.

The 30-year old Barcelona-born player is equipped with a lot of experience playing in different colors over the years having over 150 appearances in La Liga. Starting his career from RCD Espanyol’s youth academy in 2005, he made his senior debut in 2009 and his La Liga debut for the same club a year later.

He went forward to join Getafe CF in 2012, and during the time was loaned to Swansea City, where he debuted in Premier League making 12 appearances. Vásquez later returned to RCD Espanyol itself on a four-year deal. He was loaned to second division clubs Gímnastic de Tarragona and Real Zaragoza before completing his move to Sporting de Gijon in 2019.

The addition of Vásquez would bolster the attack of the team, bringing in a lot of experience and vision to the team, as they prepare to get their hands on their much-anticipated ISL trophy. The two-time ISL finalists also roped in Bhutanese Chencho Gyeltsen.
