Seville: Ivan Rakitic has decided to end his international career as he announced his retirement, reported by Croatian Football Federation on Monday.

The 32 year old has won 106 caps for his national team having been one of the greatest player ever to come out of Croatia. Playing alongside Luka Modric, the duo formed a formidable midfielder hub for over a decade which was crucial in their run to the Final of the FIFA World Cup back in 2018 where Rakitic converted the decisive penalty in the shootouts to beat Denmark and host Russia in the first two knockout rounds.

“Saying goodbye to the Croatia national team is the most difficult decision in my career, but I felt that this was the moment when I had to break and make that decision. I enjoyed every game I played for my homeland, and unforgettable moments from the World Cup will remain among my favorites. I am convinced that we still have a great team with a bright future ahead. I wish my friends and teammates all the international sports luck in the upcoming challenges, and they will have the biggest fan in me,”  Rakitic on his retirement.

Born in Switzerland, Rakitic represented Switzerland youth teams before he opted to switch to his parents home nation making his full international debut for Croatia on 8 September 2007 in their UEFA Euro 2008 qualifier against Estonia in Zagreb.

The Midfielder is currently with the Sevilla squad after his transfer from FC Barcelona.
