IPL 2026: Royal Challengers Bengaluru Eye the Top Spot as Kolkata Knight Riders’ Survival Stakes Rise, Varun Chakravarthy Concern Looms in Raipur

Bengaluru: Royal Challengers Bengaluru will take on Kolkata Knight Riders in the 57th match of the Indian Premier League on Wednesday, 13 May, at Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium, New Raipur. In this crucial clash, RCB will aim to strengthen their position at the top of the table, while KKR come into this encounter with a must-needed victory to keep their playoff hopes alive. Meanwhile, the availability of Varun Chakravarthy remains in doubt for this crucial fixture.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru currently hold the 2nd position with 14 points from 11 matches, securing 7 wins and 4 losses. They come into this clash after a nail-biting win over Mumbai Indians at the same venue, regaining momentum after previous back-to-back losses. With incredible form from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, their bowling attack has been highly effective and impactful. In batting, in the absence of Phil Salt, Jacob Bethell and the top order have struggled slightly to score heavily in the powerplay. However, Krunal Pandya handled the situation brilliantly in the last match, providing stability and finishing strongly in the death overs.

On the other side, Kolkata Knight Riders have bounced back strongly after five consecutive losses, winning four matches in a row. In their last match against Delhi Capitals, they successfully restricted the opposition to 142 and chased it down comfortably, with a magnificent century leading the charge by Finn Allen. Though their batting line-up still needs consistency, and their bowling has performed outstandingly, for today’s match KKR are concerned about the availability of Varun Chakravarthy, who aggravated a left-leg injury in the previous game and remains doubtful for the match. In the pre-match press conference before the KKR vs RCB clash, assistant coach Shane Watson said Chakravarthy, who suffered the injury in his left leg during the previous match, remains doubtful for the game. He said, “He’s just being monitored at the moment. Obviously, he was sore the second last game, and in the last game he was in a lot of pain, even though he still bowled incredibly well,” Watson added. “We’ve got our fingers crossed that he will be available for tomorrow, but we’re still not exactly sure.”

Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru face each other for the first time this season in a crucial phase of the league. In IPL history, they have faced each other 36 times, with KKR winning 20 matches, RCB winning 15, and 1 match ending in no result, highlighting a closely contested rivalry over the years.

The weather in Raipur is expected to remain mostly clear with ideal playing conditions. Temperatures are likely to range between 27°C and 30°C, with moderate humidity around 55–60%. There is minimal chance of rain, so a full match is expected. Light winds may be present, and dew could play a significant role in the second innings, potentially favoring the chasing side. The pitch at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium is expected to be slightly slow and challenging for batters. Early movement may assist fast bowlers, while spinners could become more effective in the middle overs due to the surface conditions. A first-innings score of around 170–180 is expected to be competitive. Dew in the second innings may ease batting conditions, making the toss crucial, with teams likely preferring to bowl first. Overall, this clash promises to be exciting—whether KKR continue their winning momentum to stay alive in the playoff race, or RCB secure two crucial points to strengthen their position in the top four.
