Wankhede: Mumbai Indians (MI) pulled off their highest successful run chase of 229 in IPL history, powered by the commanding opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton. They defeated Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by six wickets, with 8 balls to spare, in the 47th match of IPL 2026 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, on May 4.

Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants both made key changes to their playing XI. MI were led by Suryakumar Yadav in the absence of Hardik Pandya, while Rohit Sharma returned to the playing XI after injury. Corbin Bosch was also included. On the other side, LSG brought in Josh Inglis, who made his debut, and Akshat Raghuwanshi replaced Mukul Choudhury.

The match began with MI won the toss and elected to bowl first. LSG opened with Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis. Marsh started with fiery hitting, while Inglis was dismissed early after scoring 13 off 5 balls. LSG raced to 51/1 in four overs, with Marsh leading the charge. Nicholas Pooran came in at number 3 and played an astounding knock of 63 off just 21 balls, including 8 sixes. Along with Marsh, they built a stunning 94-run partnership off 35 balls. At that moment, it seemed LSG would easily cross 250, but the momentum shifted when Corbin Bosch came to bowl in the 9th over and dismissed both set batters—Pooran (63 off 21) and Marsh (44 off 25)—within the same over. Then skipper Rishabh Pant came in but was dismissed early for 15 off 10 by Will Jacks. Debutant Akshat Raghuwanshi also fell cheaply, giving Raghu Sharma his maiden IPL wicket. With these quick wickets, the run flow slowed down. However, Aiden Markram and Himmat Singh accelerated later, building a steady unbeaten partnership of 68 runs off 49 balls. LSG ended with a massive total of 228/5 in 20 overs. Corbin Bosch took 2 crucial wickets for 20 runs in 2 overs, while Raghu Sharma picked up 1 for 36 in 4 overs, helping control the middle overs after the explosive start.

Chasing 229, Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton produced a sensational and dominant batting display, putting together a jaw-dropping 143-run opening partnership in just 10.5 overs, dismantling the LSG bowling attack. Rickelton smashed 83 off just 32 balls, including 8 sixes, at a strike rate of 259.4. Rohit Sharma played a terrific and aggressive knock, scoring 84 off 44 balls, especially targeting the last over of the powerplay where he smashed 21 runs off Avesh Khan. Rohit returned after missing five matches due to a hamstring injury he suffered against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 12.

The breakthrough for LSG came in the 10.5th over when Mohsin Khan dismissed Rickelton, but by then MI needed only 86 runs from 55 balls. Rohit continued the attack before being dismissed by Manimaran Siddharth, caught by Mohammed Shami. MI then needed 52 runs in the last six overs. Tilak Varma was dismissed for 11 by Siddharth, who finished with 2 wickets for 47 runs. Suryakumar Yadav also got out after scoring 12, dismissed by Shami. Naman Dhir played a composed unbeaten knock of 23 off 12 balls, and Will Jacks finished the chase with a six.

LSG’s bowling struggled badly against MI’s powerful batting strength. MI successfully chased down their highest target. Their previous highest chase was 221 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders at the same venue earlier this season. Ryan Rickelton was named Player of the Match. With this win, MI made a strong comeback, registering their third win and second win at home, placing them 9th on the table with 6 points. Meanwhile, LSG remained at the bottom with 4 points.
