Chennai: Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) etched their name into the playoff qualification race after securing a highly crucial five-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) while chasing on the challenging, slow surface of Chepauk. Spectacular partnerships from Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen brilliantly guided SRH to a comfortable win in the 63rd match of IPL 2026 on Monday, 18 May, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.

The match began with CSK winning the toss and electing to bat first. The innings started aggressively as Sanju Samson provided a fantastic start with 27 off just 13 balls, smashing boundaries all around the ground before being dismissed by Pat Cummins in the 2.3rd over. With that innings, Sanju Samson added his name to a list long dominated by MS Dhoni, as the Chennai Super Kings wicketkeeper-batter broke Dhoni’s record for most runs scored by a designated CSK wicketkeeper in a single IPL season. Dhoni had scored 461 runs in 16 innings during the 2013 season. Samson needed only 12 runs to go past that mark and successfully reached the milestone. SRH got an early breakthrough, Urvil Patel came in with an onslaught, smashing sixes in just a few deliveries. However, he was trapped by a slower ball from Sakib Hussain after scoring 13 off 8 balls. Kartik Sharma then played a quick and impactful cameo of 32 off 19 balls before being dismissed by Pat Cummins once again. Meanwhile, Ruturaj Gaikwad struggled during the middle overs, managing only 15 off 21 balls before falling to SRH captain Pat Cummins. At that stage, CSK were 100 for 4 in 11.3 overs. In a difficult situation, Dewald Brevis and Shivam Dube stitched together a much-needed and crucial partnership. Brevis played a fluent and attacking knock of 44 off 27 balls, while Dube anchored the innings well with a supportive 26 off 23 balls. The partnership was eventually broken by Eshan Malinga, who bowled brilliantly to dismiss Brevis. In the very next over, Dube was also bowled by Sakib Hussain. Prasthn Veer then came in and provided a finishing touch with 11 off 9 balls before being dismissed on the final ball by Praful Hinge . With that, CSK ended their innings at 180 for 7 after 20 overs. The bowling performance of SRH was highly impressive, especially Pat Cummins’ fantastic spell of 3 for 28 in his four overs, where he provided breakthroughs at crucial moments. Sakib Hussain also bowled brilliantly, finishing with figures of 2 for 34.

Chasing 181, SRH suffered an early setback as Travis Head was dismissed by Mukesh Choudhary after scoring just 6 off 6 balls. However, Abhishek Sharma provided early support with a useful 26 off 21 balls before being dismissed by Akeal Hosein. Ishan Kishan played a magnificent knock of 70 off 47 balls, smashing 7 fours and 3 sixes while anchoring the innings brilliantly. Alongside him, Heinrich Klaasen produced a destructive innings of 47 off 26 balls, including 6 fours and 2 sixes during the middle overs. The duo stitched together a crucial 75-run partnership, which completely shifted the momentum in favour of SRH. Klaasen was eventually dismissed after a brilliant stumping by Sanju Samson, while Ishan Kishan also fell later to Anshul Kamboj. Although wickets fell quickly during the death overs, the damage had already been done. Salil Arora and Smaran Ravichandran comfortably finished the chase in the 19th over as SRH reached 181 for 5. CSK bowlers started well but were unable to take crucial wickets at the right moments.

With this victory, SRH secured their place in the playoffs qualification race. For his match-winning knock, Ishan Kishan was awarded the Player of the Match. On the other hand, with this defeat, CSK are now in serious trouble and their playoff hopes remain under pressure.
