Mumbai: The problems are never-ending for Mumbai Indians. After they had their fifth consecutive defeat in IPL 2022 on Wednesday against Punjab Kings in Pune, Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma has been fined 24 lakh rupees for maintaining a slow over-rate during his side’s clash against Punjab.

Notably, this was Rohit’s second offense in the Indian Premier League 2022 and if he’s found guilty one more time, the MI skipper would be banned for one game. Alongside skipper Rohit, the other members of the MI playing XI were also fined 6 lakh or 25% of their match fees, whichever is lower.

The same was confirmed in a release issued by the official site of the IPL. Notably, Rohit became the first captain to commit multiple offenses of maintaining a slow over-rate this season.

“The Mumbai Indians have been fined after they maintained a slow over rate during their TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 match against Punjab Kings at the MCA Stadium, Pune on April 13,” read the release issued by the IPL.

“This was the team’s second offense of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offenses. Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma  was fined Rs 24 lakhs and the rest of the members in the playing eleven were fined Rs 6 lakhs or 25 percent of their match fee, whichever is lower,” added the release.

If the Rohit-led side repeats the offense for the third time Rohit will be fined Rs 30 lakh and would also be handed a one-match suspension as per the official rules laid by IPL.
“The official rules on minimum over rate requirements states: The third and each subsequent offence in a Season as Captain of the bowling team, the Captain will be fined Rs. 30 lakh and banned from playing in the Team’s next League Match.”

For the unversed, Rohit was earlier fined INR 12 lakh for the same offence in MI’s first match of the season against Delhi Capitals (DC) on March 27. MI is the only side in the ongoing IPL 2022 season with no win and are lying at the bottom of the points table. Hence, the MI skipper has a serious need to keep a check on the clock in the next match against Lucknow Super Giants on Saturday.
