Indian Men’s Football team iconic captain Sunil Chhetri set to retire from International Football after India’s Match against Kuwait in FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifier on June 6.

Sunil Chhetri posted a video on social media announcing the same.

He said, ” The feel that I recollect in the last 19 years is a very nice combination of duty, pressure and immense joy,” the 39-year-old Chhetri said while announcing his decision to retire.

I never thought individually these are the games I’ve played for the country, this is what I’ve done good, I’ve done bad. But, now I did it, this last one-and-a-half two months. It felt very strange,” he said. “I did it because I was going towards the decision that the next game was going to be my last.

Every training that I do with the national team, I just want to enjoy. The game against Kuwait demands pressure, we need the three points to qualify for the next round. It’s hugely important for us.

But in a strange way, I don’t feel the pressure because these 15-20 days with the national team and the match against Kuwait is the last”.

Sunil Chhetri has 150 goal International appearances, 94 goals to his name for India.

The Arjuna Award holder holds the record of AIFF player of the year record 7 times, most by any player.

Chhetri helped India win the 2007, 2009, and 2012 Nehru Cup, as well as the 2011, 2015, 2021 and 2023 SAFF Championship. He also led India to victory in the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup, which qualified them to their first AFC Asian Cup in 27 years.

The Man with iconic career will hang his boots on June 6 after the game against Kuwait.
