India to play 4-nation Unity Cup with Jamaica, Nigeria as participants

0

Kolkata : AIFF has confirmed that Indian Senior Football team is set to play Unity Cup in London, involving 4 nations with likes of Nigeria, Jamaica and probably a low ranked African nation from May 26 to 30.

Recent performance of participants

Nigeria (WR : 21) narrowly missed FIFA World Cup 2026 spot after falling short in playoffs stage.

Jamaica (WR : 71) too came close but a loss to DR Congo in final round denied their entry.

Both teams are expected to draw significant attention at the Unity Cup, continuing the tournament’s tradition of featuring nations with strong diaspora communities in the United Kingdom.

What is Unity Cup and it’s history?

Unity Cup is played among countries with large diasporas in the United Kingdom, with Nigeria, Ghana, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago playing in the previous edition of the tournament, at the Brentford Community Stadium.

Republic of Ireland, Nigeria and Jamaica featured in the original Unity Cup held in the summer of 2004.

The Super Eagles are the defending champions, having won all three editions of the tournament.

“The Unity Cup features nations with large communities in the UK,” a senior official was quoted as saying to TOI on Wednesday.

“India have been invited for the first time.”

There is also a shared history between Nigeria and India at the tournament.

The 2004 edition of the Unity Cup had its highest scorer in Bartholomew Ogbeche, the Nigerian striker who spent 5 seasons in the Indian Super League before retiring in 2023 with one ISL Golden Boot and as the then record goalscorer in the league’s history.

While the fourth participating team has not yet been officially announced, it is likely to be another African nation. The tournament will follow a knockout format, with the semifinal winners progressing to the final, while the losing sides will compete for third place.

India’s brief history in England

India will return to England after many years. First time they played in the nation, dates back to 1948 London Olympics. Then, in 2000, the Bhaichung Bhutia led India faced clubs like Fulham (0-2 loss) and West Bromwich Albion (0-0 draw) before ending the tour with a win over Bangladesh (1-0 win) . In fact, India faced Jamaica in 2002, losing 3-0 and drawing 0-0, in the Blue Tigers’ last outing on UK soil.

“India has a large community in the UK so the team is expected to attract a good crowd.” said another official.

India recently concluded their AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers campaign on high defeating Hong Kong 2-1 at Kochi, with dream debut of Ryan Williams and climbing 5 spots in FIFA Rankings. Despite failing to qualify, they will carry the confidence in Unity Cup under guidance of coach Khalid Jamil.
