Kanpur: Shreyas Iyer(75*) scored a stellar fifty while Ravindra Jadeja(50*) played a handy knock as india steadied its innings of Day 1 of the 1st Test against New Zealand in Kanpur on Thursday.

New Zealand made a superb comeback after the hosts looked good till the lunch at 82/1.The Kiwi bowlers tried to test the Indian batters in the morning session after Ajinkya Rahane opted to bat and though the visitors picked up the priced scalp of Mayank Agarwal, Both Subhman Gill(52) and Cheteshwar Pujara looked a good right from the start seeing it through to the first session.

Gill brought up his half century just before the break but fell to Kyle Jamieson right after the lunch with the Kiwi seamer initiating a comeback in the afternoon session. Jamieson who had a stellar outing against India in the WTC final a few months ago, did test the hosts again succeeding to sent skipper Ajinkya Rahane as well as both the openers and with Tim Southee sent Cheteshwar Pujara back to pavilion earlier than his captain, the hosts were reeling at 145/4.

However, debutant Shreyas Iyer and Ravindra Jadeja worked together to build a positive wall, not just to pull India out of the danger zone of being all-out on the opening day, but also to establish the foundation for a respectable first innings total on which the team could capitalise on Day 2.

Shreyas despite on his debut played the game on its merit but also not putting too much pressure on himself by going into the shell while Jadeja continued his recent good form with the bat scoring his 17th Test half-century. If the duo can manage the first session on the next day, India can post a solid total.

Brief Scores: India 258/4 (Shreyas Iyer 75*, Subhman Gill 52; Kyle Jamieson 3/47, Tim Southee 1/43), Match to continue.
