Igor Angulo believes striking first was key for winning against Kerala blasters

Goa: Igor Angulo has already proved his class in FC Goa colours. The Spaniard has provided the Midas touch to the Gaurs’ attack plundering five goals in his very first four games in India.

Angulo displayed his skill again against Kerala on Sunday. His second brace of the season helped FC Goa back into the top 4 and cemented his place at the top of the ISL Golden Boot race.

The 36-year-old remarked that striking first against the Blasters was key for the Gaurs and also spoke about the importance of the three points for the psyche of the team. “We controlled the game as always. We were precise with our work in the final third. Except for that, there wasn’t anything special (red cards, penalties, etc) that was different,” said Angulo.

“The first goal really made a difference. We were able to score first. That was the key. (The win was) Essential. It was not just the three points. The performance, the result gives us more confidence in ourselves and realise that we are on the right front.

“This season, performances and results like these are very important. Being away from the fans and everything, these nights help in lifting the spirits and bringing smiles to faces,” he said.

The Spaniard wanted to use the first win as a springboard for the future. He is quite optimistic that the best days for the team are yet to come – a team that he feels can beat anyone in the league.

“We’re getting better every day. We are working on the details and the more we train, the better we know each other. As for me, I’m a striker, I have to score goals, that’s what I did against Kerala,” added Angulo.

“That is the best way I can help the team. And I am focussed to keep working hard on that every single day to keep helping the team. We’re always more focussed on ourselves than the opponent. We know that if we’re at 100 per cent we can win every single game in this league. Yesterday we proved it.”

Angulo’s haul of 5 goals in 4 is the highest for any player to start his career in FC Goa colours barring Ferran Corominas. Coro started off his days as a Gaur with an even bigger bang – bagging 7 goals in his first 4 games.
