India’s poor batting performance cost them dearly, but England’s four-wicket triumph on Wednesday gave them a new lease on life in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022. It was a must-win game for the defending champions, who had lost their previous three games. They were promoted from seventh to sixth place.

England, the four-time champions, stumbled a little before completing the task in 31.2 overs, with skipper Heather Knight leading from the front with an unbroken 53-run inning. The Women in Blue, on the other hand, has two victories and just as many losses from four matches and is still in third place. India only managed 134 runs in 36.2 overs, with Smriti Mandhana leading the way with a 35-run knock.

Brief Scores: India: 134 all out in 36.2 overs (S Mandhana 35, R Ghosh 33; Charlie Dean 4/23). England: 136 for 6 in 31.2 overs. (H Knight — not out, Nat Sciver 45; M Singh 3/26).
