Melbourne: International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the schedule for the Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 on Friday. India will play arch-rivals Pakistan in their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 campaign opener at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on October 23 while Australia will defend their title against New Zealand on October 22 in a re-run of last year’s final.

The tournament will be hosted by big-time Australia- set to commence on October 16 and runs until November 13, for the first time. While MCG will host the final on November 13. The two semifinals will be in Sydney and Adelaide on November 9 and 10 respectively.

In the previous edition, India had opened their campaign against Pakistan in Dubai, with the latter winning by 10 wickets. It was also the first time Pakistan had won a World Cup match against India.

The tournament will be played in two halves. The first round consists of eight teams divided into two groups. The hosts have been drawn in Group 1 of the Super 12 phase of the competition alongside New Zealand, who they defeated in Dubai in November, as well as England, Afghanistan, the winners of Group A and runners-up in Group B from the first round.

Group 2 will feature India, Pakistan, South Africa, Bangladesh plus the Group B winners and Group A runners-up.

Sri Lanka, Namibia, Scotland, and the West Indies have already sealed their participation in the first round, with four more from global qualifiers expected to join. The top two teams from each of the first round groups will proceed to the Super 12 stage, where they will be split into two groups of six teams each.
