Former Ranji player Robin Morris arrested for IPL betting

Mumbai: The Mumbai police have arrested former first-class cricketer Robin Morris and two others — Dhirendra Kulkarni and Rohit Babu Bhimanna — for allegedly running a betting racket on the ongoing Indian Premier League matches.       

The police said, “They had received specific information about betting activity at Morris’s flat at Yari Road in Andheri West. A raid was carried out and three people, including Morris, were arrested. The trio was allegedly found accepting bets for the match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).”

“Morris was involved in taking bets on an IPL match,” said an officer. The police seized several mobile phones, two tablet gadgets, and cash worth Rs 9,000 from his flat.
The trio was arrested under sections 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 465 (punishment for forgery), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged), and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections 4 and 5 (A) of the Gambling Act.

The three were produced before the court which sent them to police custody for further investigation. The 44-year-old Morris, who had represented Mumbai and Odisha in Ranji Trophy played 42 first-class games and 51 List A games for Mumbai and Odisha between 1995 and 2007.

He had landed in trouble last year as well. On December 1, 2019, he and four others were arrested for kidnapping a loan agent from Kurla and taking him to Versova to recover Rs 2 lakh.
