Former Juventus chair calls Cristiano Ronaldo ‘a mistake in Turin’

Turin: Amidst all the transfer rumours surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit, former Juventus Chairman Giovanni Cobolli Gigli dropped the bomb stating that it had been a mistake to bring the Portuguese skipper to Italy.

The transfer rumours regarding Ronaldo has been one of the hottest topics of late, but the Juventus striker put a full stop to all posting a message on his social media stating he ain’t going anywhere.

“I’ve always been honest: signing Ronaldo was a mistake. It’s impossible to recoup the investment and it will remain that way. He’s a great player, but I have to be honest – the sooner he leaves, the better for him and for Juventus,” said Gigli.

The Italian side brought Ronaldo from Real Madrid in 2018 for a reported fee of 100m pounds. The Serie A giants were desperate to get their hands on the Champions League trophy and anticipated that the addition of the former Manchester United star would bolster their chances.

Even with Ronaldo, the conditions have been adverse for them. Juventus not only lost the league title last season and narrowly qualified for the upcoming Champions League. Gigli believes that the arrival of the star had affected them in an adverse way and the sooner Ronaldo exits Juventus the better.

He further added that the Juventus attack is better without him on the pitch. Former manager Andrea Pirlo had often benched the Portuguese with the same thought, which had angered the Portuguese spiking the rumours of his departure.

“I hope that Massimiliano Allegri knows how to continue using him like he did against Udinese. That is, with intelligence and when the game is in progress. Ronaldo hampers Juventus’ attack. Without him, they can do excellent things in collective terms,” added Gigli.

Not only Gigli, but former Juventus midfielder Massimo Mauro also made a bold statement doubting Ronaldo’s leadership qualities, which the former thinks are not that great. Even Maurizio Sarri had previously claimed that managing Ronaldo is a difficult job, keeping his personal interest over the teams’.

“Ronaldo has never been a leader where he has played and he never will be. He is like a company and his turnover is more important to him than the success of the team. Cristiano doesn’t drag his teammates along with him, he always wants them to give him the ball to score goals. He is a great individualist, he is not a team player,” Massimo said to Gazzetta delo Sport.

With no proper official bid for Ronaldo, it seems like his probable destination would either be Manchester City under Pep Guardiola or Paris Saint-Germain, who had also signed Lionel Messi. The latter would see the dream come true for all football fans with Messi and Ronaldo playing alongside Neymar.
