Kolkata- Surojit Bose! The name will not strike you, if you have not been a dedicated fan of Indian football. He has played in clubs like Mahindra United, Mohun Bagan and Prayag United as a forward in the early 2000s.

He had won the I League for Mahindra United back in 2005-06 season. He was the backup to Jose Ramirez Barreto and Yusuf Yakubu then, two of the great foreigners to have ever played football in India. He was a darling of Barreto and joined Mohun Bagan the following campaign with the Brazilian. He even won the Federation Cup with Mohun Bagan that season. Then like some of his contemporaries from Bengal, Bose lost his way in Indian football and people forgot about him in the course of time.

However, tragedy was yet to arrive in Bose’s life. He was recently diagnosed with blood cancer. A man who could have been one of the top football heroes for his country and club  has fallen prey to ill fate, and now things have taken a turn for the worse as he had to be admitted in a hospital recently.

Fans and football enthusiasts alike have joined in his battle to raise funds for his treatment. Former Minerva FC owner Ranjit Bajaj has also tweeted to the Prime Minister’s office for his treatment.
