Manchester: Former Barcelona women captain Vicky Losada has signed for Manchester City on a two-year deal. Losada who has already established herself as Barcelona Femeni legend announced her departure from the club after they won the treble in the 2020-21 season.

“It was very hard, I played there for 16 years (in Barcelona), I arrived when I was 14 years old. Winning the Champions League helped me but I’m so happy to come back to England, I’ve been missing it for years,” Losada told Sky Sports.

The Spaniard came through the ranks of La Masia. She made her first-team debut in 2006. Barcelona was relegated that season following which she joined Espanyol for a year. Losada returned to Barcelona Femeni in 2008. In 2011, Barcelona won their first major trophy (Copa de la Reina) in two decades. That started shaping the team into the invincible side they are today.

Losada left for Arsenal in 2015, before returning again to her childhood club in 2016. Losada was handed the Barcelona captaincy in 2017, the year they were knocked out by Lyon in the Women’s Champions League in the quarterfinals. Barcelona finally clinched the title in 2020-21 defeating Chelsea in the final.

Speaking about her decision to join Manchester City, Losada felt Gareth Taylor’s style of play resonate with that of Barcelona. She also said she is delighted to face her former club Arsenal. Losada also won Primeira Division and Copa de la Reina with Barcelona this season.

“I like the style they’re showing, it can be the most similar to Barca. I want to play in big games, the Champions League and win trophies here. I didn’t know this was going to happen but it’s true, I remember talking with the girls in the changing room and saying “this is the best team we’ve played this year,” said Losada.

“There have been loads of emotions over the last two weeks but I see what happened as another door opened at Barcelona. We showed women’s football deserves the kind of goodbyes we see in men’s football. I was so happy and it was a privilege to be the first one,” she added.
