Kolkata: Bruno Fernandes scored a brace as Portugal beat Uruguay 2-0 in FIFA World Cup 2022. Portugal move to the top of Group H with six points from two matches as make it into the knockout stage.

After France and Brazil, Portugal became the third team to qualify into the round of 16 in FIFA World Cup 2022 before even playing their last group stage game with South Korea.

Portugal had a dominating possession holding about 70% of the game against Uruguay. Thr first-half remained goalless due to an attacking Trio of Bruno, Cristiano and Jaun. The only attack that could have made a difference came from Rodrigo Bentancur who charged through in the 32nd minute. It was well closed by Diego Costa.

In the 54th minute, Cristiano Ronaldo appeared to have converted Fernandes’ whipped in cross-shot from the left flank into the goal. On closer investigation, the goal—originally credited to Ronaldo—was actually credited to his old teammate Fernandes of Manchester United.

A protester carrying a pride flag entered the field of play shortly after the goal. He was quickly chased down and led away by security personnel.

Uruguay fought valiantly to draw. They came close to doing so in the 75th minute when substitute Maxi Gomez curled a shot from the top of the penalty area. However, Costa got beaten and it was miraculously rebounded off the post.

The game was subsequently put out of reach for Portugal, who was dismissed from the 2018 World Cup by Uruguay. Just before the game’s end when a controversial penalty was awarded to them by VAR. Fernandes calmly converted the penalty for his second goal of the game.
