Manchester: Manchester United were defeated by Wolverhampton Wanderers by 1-0 at Old Trafford on Tuesday ( January 4) in the Premier League. Wolves won in Old Trafford for the first time since 1980.

Ralf Rangnick faced the first defeat, as a strike from Joao Moutinho on 82 minutes helped them secure all three points. With the victory, Bruno Lage’s side climbed up to eighth place in the table.

Wolves created a fair amount of chances in the first half, but they were unable to find the back of the net. Daniel Podence, Ruben Neves, and Nelson Semedo all tested the United keeper, David De Gea from early on, in the game.

United did not bring much into the game except for a couple of chances. Starting with Edinson Cavani, who blasted a shot off-target instead of playing it to Mason Greenwood, who was positioned to score.

Bruno Fernandes had a chance to put United ahead as he side-footed a lowly ball from, across the box delivered by Nemanja Matic against the cross-bar. It was eight minutes away from the end when Moutinho got to hold off a headed clearance from Phil Jones and put it past de Gea, to win the match for Wolves.

“We won here. It was a good game for us. From the first minute, we had that feeling. We came here to win the game. The first half was very good from our side. I think it’s clear, a big performance from our side. A fantastic game from our boys,” Lage praised his side, post the match.

Manchester United are currently seventh in the league table with 31 points, three places away from the Champions League qualification spot. They are four points behind Arsenal, who are currently holding the 4th spot in the table.
