Liverpool: Diogo Jota scored within 97 seconds since the match started as Liverpool slumped Southampton by 4-0. Jota scored the fastest goal of the 2021-22 Premier League season at Anfield. Elsewhere, Arsenal had a comfortable 2-0 over Newcastle United.

Jota opened the scoring early after Andy Robertson set him up at the edge of the six-yard box on 97 seconds. He completed his brace on 32 minutes when Mohamed Salah crossed a ball that was side-footed by Jota.

With this assist, Salah is involved in 25 goals this season so far for Liverpool. Thiago Alcantara added the third goal for Liverpool on 37 minutes. What looked like a clearance by Southampton fell into the path of Thiago who hit it home. Virgil van Dijk added the fourth on 52 minutes, this was his first goal in 14 months.

Liverpool maintained pressure on Chelsea for the top spot as the Blues next face Manchester United.”In the end it is a good game for us. We adapted well to their three at the back. They changed again in the second half. We took advantage. There were spaces in the first half. A clean sheet too so a good performance,” Jota said post the match.

Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli scored in the second half as the Gunners bounced back from the last hefty 4-0 defeat against Liverpool. Aaron Ramsdale had to make some saves to keep Arsenal in the game.

Saka and Smith Rowe combined to break the deadlock on 55 minutes. Martinelli picked up a pass from Takehiro Tomiyasu and doubled his team’s lead on 66 minutes. With this win Arsenal equaled the points with fourth spot placed West Ham.
