ENG vs SL : Ollie Pope starts captaincy debut with win

Manchester : England defeated Sri Lanka by 5 wickets at Old Trafford, Manchester in 1st Test. This was debut captaincy for Stand In captain Ollie Pope, who’s leading the English side in absence of main Test captain Ben Stokes, who’s ruled out due to injury.

Bowling 1st , England rattled Sri Lanka top order on 6-3 with new Ball. The woes continued for Lankans as they’re 117-7 at one stage.

However, skipper Dhananjay De Silva (74), Milan Rathnayaka (72) helped Sri Lanka reach 236 runs.

England replied with 358 runs in their 1st innings, with help of Jamie Smith (111) scoring his maiden ton , Harry Brook (56) , Joe Root (42).

Ashita Fernando (4/103), Prabhat Jayasuriya (3/85) starred for Lanka.

In 2nd innings, Sri Lanka despite 1-2 , veterans Dinesh Chandimal (79), Angelo Mathews (65) held the innings.

However, the star of the innings was Kamindu Mendis (113) who scored his 3rd Test hundred and brought Sri Lanka to a score of 326.

England, chased down 205 runs as Joe Root (62) stared with his knock supported by Daniel Lawrence (34), Harry Brook (32), Jamie Smith (39). Sri Lanka did give a good fight taking 5 wickets but it wasn’t enough.
