Durand Cup 2023: Mohun Bagan Super Giants beat Mumbai City FC 3-1 to move into semi-final

Kolkata: All star performance from Mohun Bagan Super Giants gave them a phenomenal win over Mumbai City FC. In the fourth quarter-final of the Durand Cup, Jason Cummings, Manvir Singh and Anwar Ali scored for Mohun Bagan SG, in the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan. Jorge Pereyra Diaz made a single mark for the visitors. Moving into the semifinals, Mohun Bagan SG will face FC Goa at the same venue on 31st August, 2023.


Starting with their best in the bag, both the teams had a high quality midfield. The initial passes were well cancelled out, making it difficult to create much space. Mohun Bagan’s Ashique Kuruniyan managed to make space from the left and pass the ball to Jason Cummings. However, Mumbai keeper Phurba Lachnepa made a collision with the Australian forward. With that conceive, Mumbai started taking control of the match. The visitors gave Mohun Bagan SG some trouble in the defense. The positive attack became fruitful the 28th minute, Jorge Pereyra Diaz scored the equaliser for the Islanders. Greg Stewart and Alberto Noguera made a good combination, down the left flank. Mohun Bagan goalkeeper, Vishal Kaith deflected Alberto’s cross however, it fell onto the path Diaz who directed the ball into the net with his chest.


The joy for Mumbai City FC didn’t lasted long as the Mariners  revenged back to take the lead. Manvir Singh headed a looping  cross from Hugo Boumous to grab the lead. Before the break, Manvir got a chance to double the tally. A loose ball, mistaken by Apuia was rushed by the Indian forward’s left foot but it flied above the crossbar.


In the second half, Mumbai came firing out of the blocks, with a hunger for the equalizer. Greg Stewart was close to score the equaliser  with a left foot curl, that went quite closs to Vishal Kaith’s goal. Replying to that Armando Sadiku lashed his shot high above the bar. Even though Mumbai City FC were doing good the possession, Mohun Bagan kept making their chances.


Anwar Ali brought the insurance goal for Mohun Bagan in the 63rd minute. Ashique Kuruniyan dazzled Apuia and Bipin Singh with his smooth talents before throwing in a dangerous ball for Anwar Ali, who leapt high to place his header in the corner of the net. Mumbai City were hunting for ideas in the midfield as Mohun Bagan defended well, neutralising both wingers Bipin and L. Chhangte, who are typically Mumbai City’s contributors. In the end, Mohun Bagan emerged victorious in the clash of Indian football’s titans, qualifying for the semifinals.
