Bengaluru: Tilak Varma’s magnificent unbeaten 106, superbly complemented by Shreyas Gopal’s well-crafted 87, guided South Zone to a decisive 90-run first-innings lead over North Zone after overcoming an early collapse, as they finished on 285/9 in 94 overs at the stumps on Day 2 on Monday, August 31, in the second semifinal of the Duleep Trophy at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground 2 in Bengaluru.
After resuming Day 2 on 40/2, South Zone slipped into an early collapse as Gurnoor Brar produced a stunning spell and completed a four-wicket haul, leaving South Zone reeling at 113/5 by the first session. Before the match turned around completely, captain Tilak Varma produced a brilliant unbeaten century, scoring 106 off 225 balls, while Shreyas Gopal’s crucial 87 off 169 balls provided vital support and revived the innings. The duo then forged a spectacular and mammoth 175-run partnership, which helped South Zone move into a decisive first-innings lead. However, North Zone fought back strongly with the ball in the final session as South Zone suffered a late collapse. Arshdeep Singh and Anshul Kamboj picked up two wickets each, reducing South Zone from 225/5 to 270/9. But the final wicket remained out of reach, with Tilak Varma standing unbeaten as the stumps were drawn on Day 2, with South Zone finishing on 285/9 after 94 overs.
The second semifinal of the Duleep Trophy resumed on Day 2 with South Zone at 40/2, with Narayan Jagadeesan unbeaten on 34 off 58 balls and Tilak Varma remaining unbeaten on 1 off 3 balls. However, North Zone immediately applied pressure and triggered an early collapse. Gurnoor Brar spearheaded the charge, dismissing Narayan Jagadeesan (36 off 36) with his fifth delivery of the day. Soon after, with a similar delivery, he removed Smaran Ravichandran for 27 off 35 before dismissing Shaik Rasheed for a duck. Gurnoor then completed a stunning four-wicket haul, leaving South Zone at 113/5 at lunch. However, Tilak Varma, along with Shreyas Gopal, took charge and revived the innings after the early damage, as the match dramatically turned in South Zone’s favour. The duo then stitched together a crucial and stunning 175-run partnership for the sixth wicket. The partnership lasted 50 overs and 271 minutes, frustrating the North Zone bowling attack and keeping them under sustained pressure. Both batters showcased a calm, controlled and disciplined approach, displaying remarkable restraint and patience on a surface that offered very little assistance to the spinners. Their stunning partnership further strengthened South Zone’s position. The Karnataka all-rounder Shreyas Gopal played with attacking intent and brought up a well-deserved half-century in 107 balls, while Tilak reached his half-century in 149 balls, displaying remarkable patience and composure. He found his first boundary with his 154th delivery, and that boundary helped South Zone move into the first-innings lead. South Zone reached 198/5 at lunch. In the last session, North Zone produced a strong fightback and finally broke the crucial partnership. Arshdeep Singh delivered the breakthrough by dismissing Shreyas Gopal, who narrowly missed his century after edging the ball. After the wicket fell, Anshul Kamboj dismissed Tanay Thyagarajan for 6 off 17 balls, before another two wickets fell in the same over. Vidhwath Kaverappa was removed for a duck by Arshdeep, while Kavuri Sairaja was run out. But North Zone were unable to take the final wicket as Tilak Varma stood tall, held his ground firmly at the crease and remained unbeaten. The left-handed batter held his nerve excellently and survived a tense situation where he was in danger of missing out before smashing two consecutive boundaries off Gurnoor Brar and bringing up his brilliant century in 219 balls. With this century, he registered his eighth first-class hundred and delivered a magnificent unbeaten 106 off 225 balls, showing tremendous consistency and composure, with the innings proving crucial for South Zone when they needed it most. His century kept the momentum firmly with South Zone heading into Day 3, as South Zone finished at the stumps on Day 2 on 285/9 after 94 overs, leading by 90 runs.
