New Delhi: Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the ongoing ODI series against England due to a shoulder injury that he suffered in the first ODI. He will undergo a checkup next week. Reports suggest that his injury will keep him out of the entire duration of IPL 2021.

Sources in the BCCI told PTI that Iyer is set to undergo surgery on his left shoulder as he is currently in severe pain, which will rule him out of action for a minimum of four months.

“He will have to go under the knife. So, it looks not just the first part of IPL but Iyer will miss the entire IPL. It might take a minimum four months before he can hit the nets again. He has been under severe pain,” the BCCI source said.

Though the BCCI is yet to give an official statement, it is learnt that Iyer’s scan reports have shown a tear which may force him to go for surgery. Iyer had fallen badly on his left shoulder while attempting to stop a Jonny Bairstow strike in the first ODI against England on Tuesday.

“Absolutely devastated and gutted for our skipper @ShreyasIyer15 – stay strong captain – hope for a very quick recovery. Have full faith that you will come back even stronger from this. India needs you in the T20 World Cup ” Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal tweeted wishing Iyer a speedy recovery.

Not only as a captain, but Iyer will be missed by the Capitals as a pillar in the middle-order as well. Under him, they made it to their first-ever final in the tournament last season in the UAE. They ended up as the runners-up.

According to PTI, Iyer is also unlikely to play for English county side Lancashire in their one-day tournament. The English country club on Monday announced the signing of the 26- year-old for the tournament, which is starting on July 23.
