CWG 2022 Day 9 Highlights: Ravi Dahiya, Vinesh Phogat, Naveen bag Gold in Wrestling

Birmingham : India bag four gold medals and a total of thirteen medals on day 9 at Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. As a result India retain the 5th position in the Medal tally of 13 Golds, 11 Silver and 16 Bronze with a total of 40 medals.

Golden Moments

The first Gold of the day was Ravi Dahiya’s. The three time Asian Champion and Silver winner at Tokyo Olympics lived his dream in Men’s Freestyle Wrestling (57kg).  It was Ravi’s debut in Commonwealth Games. Women’s Wrestling (53kg) provided Gold as well. Vinesh Phogat maintained her clean sheet to make national record. The became the first woman to win Gold at Asian Games as well as Commonwealth Games. Phogat bagged Gold in three consecutive Commonwealth Games. The sixth Gold of the day for India was won defeating Pakistan. Naveen won Gold in his debut Commonwealth Games in Men’s Freestyle Wrestling (74kg). Bhavina Patel keeps her standards, wins Gold in Women’s Para Table Tennis Singles. This was Patel’s debut in Commonwealth Games after making history at Tokyo Olympics.

Silver Lining

Priyanka Goswami bags Silver in women’s 10km  Race Walk covering the distance in 43:30.00. The second Silver of the day came from Avinash Sable. Sable booked the second spot in 3000m Steeplechase event. With a personal as well as national record of (83:11:20). Lawn Bowl seems to be fruitful for team India. The men’s team bag Silver defeating Northern Ireland.

Brilliant Bronze

Jasmine made India proud bagging bronze in women’s boxing (60kg). Another bright day for Pooja Ghelot as the U-23 World Championship silver winner bag Bronze in Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022. Ghelot won bronze in Women’s Wrestling (50kg).  Pooja Sigah won Bronze in Women’s Wrestling (76kg). 19 year-old debutant Deepak Nehra grabbed Bronze in Men’s Freestyle Wrestling ( 97kg). Mohd Hussamudin displayed exceptional performance to win Bronze in Men’s Boxing (57kg). Sonal Patel wins Bronze in Women’s Para Table Tennis Singles. Rohit Tokas dominates opponent to win Bronze in Men’s Boxing (67kg).

Day 10 at the Commonwealth will be very eventful for the Indian contingent. As the women will fight for Bronze in Hockey and Gold in Cricket. Wrestlers will advance themselves for a medal assurance for the
