CWG 2022: Boxers Nikhat Zareen, Lovlina Borgohain seal berths

Nikhat Zareen, the reigning world champion, and Olympic bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain both won their selection trials for the Indian side for the Commonwealth Games on Saturday.

While Nikhat, a two-time Strandja Memorial gold medalist, defeated Haryana’s Minakshi by a 7-0 unanimous decision, Lovlina defeated Railways Pooja by the same score. The other boxers that secured berths for the quadrennial event were Nitu (48kg) and Jasmine (60kg).

Nikhat appeared to be in command during the fight, delivering clean blows as she danced about the ring. Nitu, a two-time previous youth world champion, defeated 2019 silver medalist Manju Rani in a 5-2 split decision. Haryana’s boxer is having a successful year.

Earlier this year, she won gold in the Strandja Memorial competition. In a fast-paced light-middleweight final, Jasmine, the 2021 Asian Youth Boxing Championship bronze medalist, outpunched 2022 World Championship bronze medalist Parveen Hooda.

The CWG will take place in Birmingham from July 28 to August 8. Nitu (48kg), Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Jasmine (60kg), and Lovlina Borgohain made up the team (70Kg).
