Liverpool: Liverpool secured their place in the Champions League round of 16 as the group winners, with a 1-0 win against Ajax at Anfield on Wednesday (December 2). When Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana failed to collect Neco Williams’ cross from the right-wing, Curtis Jones taped it in at the far post on 58 minutes hence scoring the only and the deciding goal.

The Reds went in the backfoot when Alisson Becker was ruled out due to injury. Caoimhin Kelleher, a 22-year-old UCL debutant’s solid effort saw Jurgen Klopp sprinting to the field and hugging him.

He saved a shot from Noussair Mazraoui and prevented him from putting the Dutch side ahead. This was sixty seconds before Jones scored the winner. The young Irish keeper’s highlight of the night was when he denied Klaas-Jan Huntelaar header to preserve Liverpool’s 1-0 lead over Ajax.

“It was an amazing one for me, to make my debut in a Champions League game was massive and we got the win and qualified. A great night,” Kelleher said. “That’s what I’m there for, I work every day in training to make sure I am ready and I was able to make a good few saves.”
