Chennai: Chennaiyin FC have announced the signing of Brazilian midfielder Emerson Gomes de Moura, better known as Memo on Sunday (October 4) ahead of the Indian Super League 2020-21. The 32-year-old from the Samba nation joins the two-time ISL champions on a free transfer after his contract with Jamshedpur FC expired. The club unveiled the signing on their social media.

Memo entered the ISL in 2016 when he was signed by Delhi Dynamos (now Odisha FC) after playing for the Brazilian lower division league. Surprisingly he made his tournament debut against Chennayin the same year in October.

“I am delighted to be a part of the blue Chennaiyin family. The upcoming season will be fantastic, I am certain. It is a pity we won’t be able to feel the warmth of the fans in the stands, as they are truly incredible and loyal. Every time I have played in Chennai, I have truly felt their passion. They will always be in our thoughts, and we have to work hard and be united to achieve glory. A unique ISL awaits us, which will be a spectacle in itself,” the Brazilian said after the move.

A dynamic no-nonsense midfielder with hard-tackling traits, Memo was rock-solid for Jamshedpur in the 2018-19 season and didn’t miss a single game making the most interceptions (39). “Memo is a solid addition to our squad. His rich experience of playing in the ISL will provide a huge boost, along with his versatility in key defensive areas,” explained CFC head coach Csaba László.

“We have signed a proven and dependable individual in Memo, who is sure to hit the ground running. His skill-set comprises the perfect combination of technical adeptness and aggression, which is something the youngsters in our team can also benefit from.”
