Chelsea establish as title contenders; Manchester United, Brighton triumph

London: Chelsea bolstered their title credentials once more with a 3-0 win against Tottenham Hotspurs in the fifth matchday of the Premier League at Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium. Jesse Lingard’s winner and David De Gea’s heroics helped Manchester United bag all the points against West Ham.

Although the domination was pretty much shared between the two sides in the first half, going 0-0 into the break, the Blues were far from stoppable in the second. The riot started with Thiago Silva heading home a corner from Marcus Alsonso at about 49 minutes. The second came from N’ Golo Kante after the 2018 Fifa World Cup winner’s long-range strike found the net after deflecting off Eric Dier.
Antoine Rüdiger netted the final of the night two minutes into the extra time, as he dispatched Timo Werner’s cutback.

Chelsea were regarded as title contenders from the start of the season and so far their performances have helped in keeping a stronghold of the statement as they move to the top of the table but their credentials will be tested once more the next match day as they host defending champions Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on September 25.

Elsewhere at London Stadium, Manchester United came from behind to grab all three points against West Ham United. As the hosts took the lead ahead at 30 minutes by Saïd Benhrama which was equalized five minutes later by Cristiano Ronaldo himself, it exposed a lot of flaws in the Red Devils’ defence.

It cemented the point that the Manchester side needs more than just Cristiano’s goals to run for the title. A late strike from Lingard gave United the much-needed lead at the 89th minute making up for his error that led to his side’s loss at the hands of YSC Young Boys. The visitors survived a scare when De Gea denied Mark Noble after West Ham received a spot-kick in the dying minutes of the game. Manchester United will be hosting Aston Villa next at Old Trafford and would like to keep their unbeaten start to the league.

In another match of the same day, Brighton got better of Leicester City with a 2-1 win. Neal Maupay and Danny Welbeck found the net for the hosts before Jamie Vardy pulled one for his Leicester.
