Madrid: A late goal from Anthony Elanga cancelled Joao Felix stunning header, as Manchester United held Atletico Madrid to a 1-1 draw in UEFA Champions League Round of 16 at Wanda Metropolitano on Thrusday ( February 24).
Atletico made a strong start during the first leg of the clash which was played at Madrid. The host took full control of the game during the opening half and also took a well deserved lead on seven minutes. Joao Felix scored a superb header from Renan Lodi’s cross.
The host kept the entire first half under their control, as United looked lost on the field. The hosts continued to create chances in the first half, although they could not score. “The truth is I’m annoyed. I don’t think we deserved to draw. We did a lot to win. We were totally superior to them in almost every aspect of play,” Atletico’s Josema Gimenez post the match.
However, as the winning line was in view of the Spanish side, Elanga scored the equaliser. Elanga was subbed on and he scored from the first real threat posed by the Mancunians.
On the other hand, Ajax played a 2-2 draw against Benfica. Sebastien Haller scored an own goal and a goal for his team in the encounter. Dusan Tadic opened the scoring for Ajax. Roman Yaremchuk scored the equaliser as the match ended 2-2.
