Kolkata : East Bengal defeated Mohun Bagan Super Giants 3-2 in Calcutta Football League 2025 after nail biting encounter.
The Kolkata derby in CFL roots it’s long history. Last year East Bengal edged past Mohun Bagan 2-1. This year, the outcome was similar.
In first half, East Bengal’s skipper Jesin TK opened the scoring in first half, with a good pass from Sayan Banerjee and Jesin made no mistake in slotting it to the net.
Mohun Bagan’s Suhail Ahmad Bhat had created multiple chances to score but narrowly failed to convert those, as in one occasion Kiyan Nassiri smashed the Ball against the bar.
It was Sayan Banerjee who capitalized and scored magnificent goal skipping Ball past the goal keeper after an assist from Edmund in added time of first half to give 2-0 lead to Mohun Bagan.
In 2nd half, Mohun Bagan looked positive and opened the scoring in the 53rd minute as Mohun Bagan’s Leewan Castanha smashed it into the nets.
Just after 14 minutes, Kiyan, the home comer this season, announced his return delivering an equalizer , converting Leewan’s assist, flicking into the goal post.
However, the joy of Mohun Bagan was shortlived as just after 2 minutes, East Bengal’s newly signed David Lalhlansanga delivered the lead after Aman Ck’s perfect cross from right and David delivering the head. David also had golden chance to score 4th goal for East Bengal in 83rd minute but missed it completely.
By the end of game in added time, Mohun Bagan had 2 chances. Kiyan failed to convert the first one as he shot off target from tight angle. With 3 minutes remaining Suhail had another chance to deliver equalizer but due to lose contact, he missed it.
Ultimately, East Bengal didn’t allow Mohun Bagan to score any further goal and won the first Bengal derby of the season 3-2 , earning vital points in CFL 2025.
With an assist and a goal, Sayan Banerjee of East Bengal was awarded player of the match.
