India started the day with 164/5, Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant at crease.
The duo departed after adding vital runs, on 221.
Nitish Reddy (105*) & Washington Sundar (50) added record partnership of 127 runs before Sundar falling to Nathan Lyon.
Reddy went on to score his maiden ton, with an innings of 105* (176), comprising 10 boundaries and 1 six, minimizing the train to 116 runs before rain interrupted and the stumps being called.
India are on 358-9, with Nitish and Md Siraj (2*) at crease.
