Bengaluru : A relatively new-look Bengaluru FC will look to get their Indian Super League (ISL) 2026-27 campaign off to the perfect start when the Blues host SC Delhi in what holds the promise of an intriguing opener at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, in Bengaluru, on Saturday.
Bengaluru secured a 2-0 victory when the sides met previously, with Sivasakthi Narayanan opening the scoring before Sunil Chhetri sealed the result. The new campaign offers Delhi an early opportunity to respond, while Bengaluru are keen to make home advantage count.
Head Coach Pep Muñoz addressed the long pre-season and the physical toll of the international window while speaking with the press on the eve of the game. Key Blues, including Ryan Williams, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, and Ashique Kuruniyan, returned late from rigorous national duties that saw them play three games in a span of ten days. Williams clocked staggering physical numbers across heavy fixtures against Brazil and Uruguay.
“We have to take care of our players,” Muñoz noted. “Ryan Williams probably ran the most and played the most minutes around the world in this FIFA window. If he’s well recovered, he will start, if not, we have to use him in the second half.”
Despite minor fitness concerns, Muñoz emphasized squad depth and noted that midfielder Suresh Wangjam, entering his eighth season, and the rest of the group had a productive pre-season. He stressed that while winning is paramount, entertaining the Bengaluru fan base with a proud club identity remains essential.
On the other side, Sporting Club Delhi arrive with match sharpness from the Durand Cup. Led by Tomasz Tchórz, Delhi have the League’s youngest squad (average age 24.3). Rather than be intimidated by the Kanteerava, Delhi will rely on continuity, high-tempo pressing, and an optimistic brand of football as they aim to build on last season’s survival battle.
Tchórz believes the experience gained last season will help his players take the next step, with developing young Indian talent remaining central to the club’s approach.
Midfielder Lalrinliana Hnamte, one of the additions to the squad, believes Delhi can aim high despite their relative youth. “We are very young but we are hungry for the trophy,” Hnamte said.
Much of the focus will be on Bengaluru’s contingent of foreigners, all of whom will be playing in India for the first time. Lessening the blow of Rahul Bheke’s departure to Mohun Bagan SG will be the arrivals of experienced defenders Menno Koch and Sandro Embalo. In the middle, Muñoz has roped in Spaniard Borja Martinez and Manuel de Iriondo. Montenegrin striker Mihailo Perovic completes the pack.
The visitors meanwhile, have shored up their foreign signings, headlined by Brazilian striker Rodriguinho who scored seven goals in the club’s semifinal run of the Durand Cup.
With Bengaluru seeking a strong start and Delhi aiming to make a statement, Saturday presents an early test of both sides’ ambitions under the lights. The game kicks off at 5 pm and will be broadcast live on YouTube, Sony Sports and SonyLIV.
