Beijing: The International Testing Agency (ITA) has revealed that Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) athlete Kamila Valieva, 15, failed a drug test in December, only months before the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

Despite failing the test, Valieva was permitted to participate and helped the ROC win gold in the figure skating team event on Monday. According to the ITA, the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) overturned the provisional suspension imposed on her as a result of the incident.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has filed an appeal against RUSADA’s decision, according to an ITA statement on Friday.

A failed drug test was done in December and only came to light during the Winter Olympics, according to Russian publication RBC Sport, triggering a scandal that is delaying the team event medal celebration.
