Madrid: Atletico Madrid retained their position at the top of the league by beating Sevilla 2-0 at home on Wednesday (January 13). They went four points clear at the top of the standings.

Atletico got off to a perfect start with Angel Correa receiving a pass from right-back Kieran Trippier and took Sevilla by surprise with a shot which bounced in off the near post to give them the lead on the 17 minutes.

Midfielder Saul Niguez scored the winning goal from the edge of the area on 76 minutes to score his first goal of the season and condemned Sevilla to a first defeat in 10 games in all competitions.

This victory took Atletico on to 41 points having played 16 games — their most since collecting 43 during their 2013-14 title-winning season, four clear of second-placed Real Madrid who have played 18.
