Tokyo: India missed on a maiden Olympics golf medal after Aditi Ashok finished fourth carding 3-under 68 in the final round. The 23-year-old Indian golfer put on a brilliant display in the Japanese capital considering the fact she finished T-41 in the Rio Olympics five years ago.

In the final round, she fired five birdies — on the 5th, 6th, 8th, 13th and 14th holes — against two bogeys on the 9th and 11th. World No.1 Nelly Korda clinched gold with a 2-under 69 ahead of Japan’s Mone Inami and New Zealand’s Lydia Ko.

Aditi could have won an elusive bronze but the two bogeys pulled her back while Ko surged ahead with a sensational nine birdies against just three dropped shots in her final round. Anirban Lahiri, who bowed out of the Tokyo Olympics, tweeted congratulating Aditi.

“@aditigolf you did everything you could and put it all out there. There may not be a medal to show but people in India will know the sport we love thanks to your effort and heart. Great performance Let’s see some public courses and driving ranges please. The kids need it,” Lahiri tweeted.
