Harare: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s blazing half-century, combined with a clinical bowling performance, guided India to a commanding seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the first T20I of the three-match series, as the visitors took a 1-0 lead on Thursday, July 23, at the Harare Sports Club in Harare.
Bowling first, the Indian pace attack, led by Mayank Yadav, restricted the hosts to a modest 125/7 despite fighting knocks from Wesley Madhevere (39 off 34), Ryan Burl (26 off 35), and Tadiwanashe Marumani (27 off 20). In reply, teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi delivered a magnificent 50 off just 19 balls, giving India’s chase a fiery start despite the early wicket of Abhishek Sharma. Captain Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan then anchored the innings as India chased down the target comfortably in just 13.2 overs, with 40 balls to spare.
The series-opening match began with India winning the toss and electing to bowl first. The decision proved to be fully justified as the Indian pace attack delivered a clinical bowling display. Mayank Yadav struck with the very first ball of the innings, dismissing Brian Bennett for a duck following a successful DRS review. However, a fighting partnership between Wesley Madhevere (39) and Ryan Burl (26), along with Tadiwanashe Marumani’s unbeaten 27 off 20 balls, helped Zimbabwe recover from the collapse and post a respectable total. The trio steadied the innings with valuable contributions as the hosts eventually finished on 125/7 at the end of their 20 overs. Mayank Yadav spearheaded India’s bowling attack with a fiery spell of 2/18 from his four overs at an outstanding economy rate of 4.50, while Prince Yadav impressed with two-wickets. Debutante Ashok Sharma bowled a disciplined spell despite going wicketless, conceding 29 runs, while Ravi Bishnoi chipped in with one wicket and gave away 24 runs.
Chasing the modest target of 126, India suffered an early setback as Abhishek Sharma was dismissed for just one run, giving Zimbabwe an early boost. However, that momentum was completely shattered by the fearless batting display of teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The chase belonged to the young star as he unleashed a breathtaking batting assault, cruising to a brilliant 50 off just 19 balls, including four boundaries and four sixes, at a stunning strike rate of 263.16. With this spectacular maiden T20I half-century, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi etched his name into the history books by becoming the youngest player ever to score a fifty in T20I cricket, surpassing Gibraltar’s previous record of 16 years and 56 days. Although he was eventually dismissed by Richard Ngarava shortly after reaching his milestone, the teenage sensation had already made a decisive impact, powering India to 68/2 in just 6.2 overs. His explosive start had completely shifted the momentum in India’s favour, putting the visitors firmly in control of the chase. Captain Shreyas Iyer anchored the innings with a composed 28 off 24 balls, while Ishan Kishan provided a valuable contribution of 35 off 24 balls before losing his wicket. Tilak Varma then came to the crease and struck the winning runs as India comfortably chased down the target with seven wickets in hand. For Zimbabwe, Blessing Muzarabani bowled well and picked up two wickets, while Richard Ngarava dismissed the dangerous Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. However, the Zimbabwe bowling attack was unable to make the impact required to defend such a modest total.
Mayank Yadav was deservedly named the Player of the Match for his fiery and spell of 2/18. With this victory, India finally ended their seven-match winless streak under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy, which included the recent tours of Ireland and England. The victory also marked Iyer’s first win as India’s T20I captain, making it a memorable milestone in his leadership journey.
