Kolkata : BCCI has announced squads for T20I series in UK against England, Ireland and with Shreyas Iyer replacing ICC T20 World Cup 2026 winning leader Surya Kumar Yadav as T20I captain in all the three squads. Teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi earns maiden call up after fabulous IPL 2026 season.
Shreyas Iyer has been in talks for taking up Indian white ball captaincy after guiding Delhi Capitals to IPL 2020 final, winning KKR the IPL 2024 trophy in dominant fashion and also leading Punjab King’s dominant run in last 2 years. Meanwhile, Surya Kumar Yadav who hasn’t performed with Bat in last few years despite leading India well in T20I Cricket has been dropped. Ajit Agarkar said the selectors have noted Shreyas Iyer’s performance as a skipper across different franchises in the IPL. They felt that the decision to axe Suryakumar Yadav was hard, but it was the right one.
Teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi the orange cap winner of IPL 2026 scored 776 runs at staggering strike rate of 237.31 has been a nemesis for bowlers. His maiden call was just moments away.
Tilak Varma who’s also being groomed as future Indian T20I captain has been appointed as Vice Captain in all 3 squads.
Star pacer Jasprit Bumrah who hasn’t found a place in England and Ireland squads for injury management, is added in Asian Games squad.
Asian Games 2026 –
India will play Asian Games 2026 set to be held at Aichi–Nagoya in Japan, between September 23 and October 8 later this year.
The Indian squad announced for Asian Games 2026 is starkly different from the one that was announced for the 2022 Games in Hangzhou. 3 years back (the Games were deferred to 2023), a Ruturaj Gaikwad-led team arrived at the Games which had multiple youngsters in them. Despite that, India won Gold.
This year, the contrast to the squad is visible as India have opted for 10 members of the T20 World Cup-winning squad.
Shreyas Iyer, Nitish Reddy, Ravi Bishnoi, Harshit Rana, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi are the only players who were not part of India’s T20 World Cup team.
Out of these five, Harshit Rana was originally set to play in the World Cup, but was injured just before the tournament. Shreyas Iyer and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi have broken the selection doors to enter the Indian team, while Nitish Reddy and Ravi Bishnoi have been named for their huge potential.

England and Ireland tour 2026
The squads for England and Ireland have been almost similar in comparison to that of Asian Games 2026. Jasprit Bumrah will be rested for injury management. Prince Yadav has been added in England, Ireland tours on back of strong domestic Cricket performances and good IPL 2026.
India will take on Ireland in a two-match T20I series from June 26 to 28 in Belfast, before playing five T20Is against England between July 1 and 11.
