Delhi: Kolkata Knight Riders produced a dominating 8-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals with 34 balls remaining, powered by a blazing maiden IPL century by Finn Allen and a brilliant spin-bowling display by KKR. With this emphatic win, KKR registered their fourth consecutive victory, continuing their remarkable delayed-season revival and keeping their playoff hopes alive, while DC suffered another defeat at their home ground in the 51st match of the IPL 2026 season on Friday, 8th May, at Arun Jaitley Stadium.
The match began with KKR won the toss and elected to bowl first. DC started the innings fluently through the opening pair of Pathum Nissanka and KL Rahul. During the innings, KL Rahul added another major milestone to his IPL career. The Delhi Capitals batter entered the record books by becoming the first player in IPL history to score more than 1000 runs for three different franchises. Rahul has now aggregated 2548 runs for Punjab Kings, 1410 runs for Lucknow Super Giants, and 1002 runs for Delhi Capitals. Furthermore, he became the fastest batter to reach the 1,000-run milestone for Delhi Capitals, getting there in just 24 innings and breaking the previous record jointly held by Rishabh Pant and JP Duminy, who achieved the feat in 35 innings. KL Rahul was dismissed by Kartik Tyagi with a slower delivery after giving DC a quick and flawless start, scoring 23 off 14 balls. With that wicket, DC ended the powerplay at 55/1. However, the introduction of spin shifted the momentum heavily in KKR’s favour. Nitish Rana failed against Sunil Narine, while Sameer Rizvi was also dismissed by Narine after miscuing a sweep straight into the deep, where Rovman Powell completed a fine catch. Pathum Nissanka continued his aggressive strokeplay and completed a composed half-century, reaching 50 off 29 balls. In the 11th over bowled by Anukul Roy, Nissanka completed his fifty on the very first delivery. However, on the second ball of the over, after attempting another big shot, Nissanka stepped out of the crease and was brilliantly stumped by Angkrish Raghuvanshi. In the same over, Anukul Roy also trapped Tristan Stubbs, reducing DC to 89/5 in 10.5 overs and pushing them into a massive middle-order collapse.
The trio of KKR spinners delivered an absolutely electrifying performance, not only taking crucial wickets at the right moments but also slowing down the scoring rate completely during the middle overs. Sunil Narine finished with figures of 1/17, Varun Chakravarthy remained wicketless but conceded only 28 runs, while Anukul Roy picked up 2/31. DC captain Axar Patel struggled with the bat, scoring 11 off 22 balls before being dismissed by Vaibhav Arora. The wicket was highlighted by a stunning catch from Anukul Roy, who covered deep midwicket brilliantly and sprinted at full speed to his left to grab the catch. Delhi Capitals found some late momentum through valuable lower-order contributions, especially from Ashutosh Sharma, who scored 39 off 28 balls before being dismissed by Kartik Tyagi, with captain Ajinkya Rahane taking a fine running catch. With that effort, DC eventually crossed the 120-run mark, which at one stage looked difficult to reach. Kartik Tyagi ended his spell by dismissing Mitchell Starc and finished with excellent figures of 2/25. DC eventually ended their innings at 141/8 after 20 overs.
Chasing 142, Kolkata Knight Riders faced an early setback with the unfortunate dismissal of Ajinkya Rahane, who was out after the ball brushed Mitchell Starc’s fingertips and deflected onto the stumps at the non-striker’s end. Soon after, Angkrish Raghuvanshi was also dismissed in an unlucky fashion as the ball grazed his glove before rolling back onto the stumps, leaving KKR at 31/2 after 3.4 overs. Then, Finn Allen and Cameron Green took complete control of the chase. The duo stitched together a stunning unbeaten 116-run partnership off just 64 balls. Finn Allen initially played in a calculated manner before accelerating the innings aggressively, completely dismantling the DC bowling attack. He launched a magnificent maiden IPL century, remaining unbeaten on a blazing 100 off just 47 balls, smashing 5 fours and a massive 10 sixes at a brilliant strike rate of 212.77. Meanwhile, Cameron Green played the perfect supporting role at the non-striker’s end, remaining unbeaten on 33 off 27 balls. Finn Allen eventually finished the match and his century in style with a huge six, sealing the victory in just 14.2 overs. With that sensational knock, he was deservedly named Player of the Match. On a pitch where DC struggled badly with the bat, suffered repeated collapses, and managed only 141 runs, Finn Allen’s explosive century completely transformed the contest and helped KKR chase down the target with 34 balls to spare.
With this victory, KKR moved up to 7th position in the points table with 9 points, keeping their playoff hopes alive. Meanwhile, DC suffered their seventh loss in 11 matches, slipping to 8th position with 6 points, leaving their playoff hopes almost over. Both teams will face each other once again later this season on 24th May at Eden Gardens.
