Laura Wolvaardt Guides South Africa to Clinical Win Over India

KOLKATA, APRIL 18, 2026: South Africa’s captain Laura Wolvaardt orchestrated a commanding knock that defeated India by 6 wickets (with 5 balls left) in the opening match of the Women’s T20 series at Kingsmead Cricket Ground in Durban on Friday, 17th April 2026. India’s inconsistent bowling attack and a merely adequate batting total seemed uncharacteristic of their usually approach.

After the World Cup final in November, both teams—India and South Africa—faced each other again. World champions India’s women’s team has been looking strong in the shortest format as well. In December last year, the team swept a five-match home series 5–0 against Sri Lanka women’s national cricket team in a dominant performance. In February this year, India also defeated Australia women’s national cricket team in a Women’s T20 series for the first time in a decade, clinching the three-match series 2–1 Down Under.

The match began with South Africa winning the toss and elected to bowl first. In batting, Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana came out to open. There was a rapid start by Shafali Verma, who scored 34 off 20 balls before being dismissed (caught Tazmin Brits, bowled Tumi Sekhukhune). Jemimah Rodrigues came in at number three. Before the powerplay ended, South Africa took Smriti Mandhana’s wicket after she scored 13 off 14 balls (caught Laura Wolvaardt, bowled Ayabonga Khaka). Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur played a crucial role in composing a competitive total with an unbeaten 47 off 33 balls. Along with Jemimah, she built a necessary partnership, which was eventually broken (caught Sune Luus, bowled Tumi Sekhukhune). Jemimah was dismissed after scoring 36 off 29 balls. The rest of the batting order was unable to contribute substantially due to the quick fall of wickets. India ended their innings at 157/7. South Africa executed their bowling plans well, especially Ayabonga Khaka, who performed brilliantly, taking 3 wickets for 16 runs in 4 overs with an economy of 4.00, earning the Player of the Match award. Tumi Sekhukhune also picked up crucial wickets.

In the chase, South Africa opened with captain Laura Wolvaardt and Sune Luus. Shreyanka Patil dismissed Luus early for 13 off 7 balls, but it did not have a major impact. Tazmin Brits came in at number three and built a solid partnership with the skipper Wolvaardt. Wolvaardt brilliantly anchored the innings and guided the team to a strong position. After the powerplay ended, they were 53/1. In 7.1 overs, Shree Charani broke the partnership by dismissing Brits for 10 off 13 balls. Annerie Dercksen then joined the skipper and contributed valuable runs. Shreyanka Patil eventually dismissed a well-set Laura Wolvaardt in the 13.2 over, but by then the damage had already been done. Annerie Dercksen remained unbeaten on 44 off 34 balls. At number five, Anneke Bosch came in but was trapped lbw by Arundhati Reddy for 8 off 6 balls. In the final over, South Africa needed 6 runs off 6 balls, and Annerie Dercksen finished the chase with a six. With that, South Africa won the first of the five-match series.

India’s bowling looked unstable, also their fielding looked same, in particular, cost them dearly. In the 19th over, they dropped two catches that could have shifted the momentum, while misfields by Richa Ghosh and others gave away runs rather casually. 23-year-old Kashvee Gautam played her debut international match, delivering a decent performance, conceding 29 runs without taking a wicket in 3 overs.

The series is serving as vital preparation for both teams ahead of the Women’s T20 World Cup in the UK in June. The second T20 is scheduled for 19th April at the same venue. After this defeat, how India comes back in the series will be interesting to watch.
