Durand Cup 2021: FC Goa, Army Green secure quarterfinal spots

Kolkata: FC Goa thrashed Jamshedpur FC 5-0, finishing with nine points in their final game of Group B at the 130th edition of Durand Cup 2021 in Vivekananda Yuvabharati Kirangan on Friday. Muhammed Nemil scored a brace to eliminate their ISL rival- Jamshedpur FC out on the final matchday of the group stage.

The first quarter of an hour was incident-free, with Goa keeping Glan Martins and Makan Chote on the bench and starting Brandon alongside Hrithik Tiwari, the tournament’s third goalkeeper.

They wanted to take control, and in the 20th minute, Devendra earned a free-header from a corner and nodded home from close range to give Goa their first goal of the game. Princeton Rebello then had two bites of the cherry inside the JFC box and fired the second one past a helpless Vishal Yadav beneath the JFC bar six minutes later.
A minute before halftime, Murgaokar added a third goal, his second of the game and third of the tournament, to put the Goans up 3-0.

Muhammed Nemil, a gifted striker, then took control of the second half with a double strike. He scored the game’s first goal shortly after the game began, and then chipped the keeper in the 81st minute for his third goal of the tournament and Goa’s fifth of the game.
It was a dominant performance by Goa, with top performances by both Nemil and Devendra

On the other hand, Army Green advanced to the Durand Cup quarterfinals with a solitary goal from Deepak Singh in the final Group B game at the Mohun Bagan ground as they defeated Sudeva Delhi FC 1-0.

Both Army Green and Sudeva created chances in the first half’s opening quarter, but it was all Greens after that.

The Greens got their first major goal chance in the ninth minute when Lallawmkima took a fantastic header but could not beat Sudeva keeper Sachin Jha. On the rebound, Shubham Rana took another shot at the goal, but Sachin made another outstanding stop.

For the majority of the first half, the ball hung around the Sudeva goal. Two back-to-back corners almost put the Greens on the board after thirty minutes, but Sachin ensured the game remained goalless at halftime.

Army Green battled hard as Deepak tapped the ball into the net in the 51st minute, owing to a fantastic assist by Dip Mazumdar.

The Delhi team had a few chances to equalize, but they were unable to get past Army Green’s defence, ending the season with three goals loss.
