Kolkata: Former India opener Devang Gandhi has been appointed as the head coach of the Bengal U-19 team, the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) announced on Tuesday. Devang had earlier served as a BCCI national selector.

“This is the second homecoming for me. It is an exciting prospect working with the young boys. It’s a new challenge to find, develop and nurture fresh talents. Looking forward to the assignment,” Devang stated after his appointment.

A prolific opening batsman, Devang rose to prominence when he made the Indian team for the tours of New Zealand and Australia in 1999-2000. Although his international career lasted four Tests and three ODIs, Devang played domestic cricket for Bengal. His domestic record counts 95 first-class and 98 List A matches.

“Devang Gandhi has been an opener in international cricket. He was a dashing cricketer for Bengal. We have got him as the U-19 coach. This will help the young cricketers develop a mindset to play cricket in a positive way,” CAB Honourary Secretary Snehashis Ganguly said.
