In a remarkable display of talent and composure, nine-year-old Aarit Kapil from Delhi stunned the global chess community by holding world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen to a draw in the prestigious ‘Early Titled Tuesday’ online tournament. Competing from his hotel room in Georgia, where he is representing India at the Under-10 World Championship, Aarit came close to defeating the five-time world champion.

Aarit, who recently finished runner-up in the Under-9 National Championship, played fearlessly against Carlsen and had the Norwegian superstar in a clearly losing position during their game. However, with the clock ticking down and just seconds remaining, the young Indian was unable to convert his advantage in a complex rook versus two minor pieces endgame. The thrilling encounter ultimately ended in a hard-fought draw, earning Aarit widespread admiration for his performance.

Despite narrowly missing out on a win, Aarit’s performance against one of the greatest players in history has caught the attention of the global chess community. His sharp play and composure against such a formidable opponent underscore his immense potential.

Meanwhile, Aarit has made a solid start at the Under-10 World Championship, securing wins in his first two rounds. He is expected to play his third match on Wednesday as he continues his pursuit of a medal.

In the same online event, fellow Indian player V Pranav emerged victorious with a remarkable 10 points out of 11. American Grandmaster Hans Moke Niemann and Carlsen both scored 9.5 points, with Niemann edging into second place based on tiebreaks.

Aarit’s exceptional performance against Carlsen is a proud moment for Indian chess, signaling the arrival of yet another young talent ready to take on the world’s best.
