Kolkata : 2025, a year, marked by historic surprises in Football world. Whether it’s New Castle, Crystal Palace, Spurs etching their names among title contenders or Harry Kane winning his first Trophy, it’s a year that Football fans were dreaming for.
Newcastle United clinch League Cup ending 56 year drought
Newcastle United defeated Liverpool in final of League Cup 2-1 , with help of Burn and Isak’s goals, winning the title, ending 56 years drought. They last won a major trophy (Inter Cities Fairs Cup) in 1969. It was also Newcastle’s first major domestic prize dating back 70 years to the 1955 FA Cup. Since the Magpies lifted the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, 30 different English teams had won silverware, while Liverpool had clinched 38 major trophies in that time.
But after losing the 2023 League Cup final against Manchester United, Howe’s team returned to Wembley and set the record straight at last.
Newcastle had endured five relegations to the second tier since their last trophy, with club legends like Alan Shearer, Paul Gascoigne and Malcolm MacDonald failing to win silverware in their time on Tyneside.
Aside from a brief period when Kevin Keegan’s self-styled “entertainers” challenged for the title in the 1990s, Newcastle have endured decades of underachievement and self-inflicted wounds that rendered them a laughing stock for long periods.
All that changed in 2021 when a Saudi-backed consortium completed a takeover from unpopular owner Mike Ashley and quickly hired Howe as their manager. Thanks to Howe’s astute leadership and the Saudi financial backing, Newcastle have been transformed from relegation candidates to silverware winners.
Crystal Palace conquer first major trophy defeating Manchester City in FA Cup Final
Crystal Palace defeated one of the giants of Europe Manchester City 1-0 in FA Cup 2025 Final with Eberechi Eze’s goal. This was the club’s first major trophy in their long history of more than 120 years.
Not only this, the club will also play in Europe for first time in history from next season. For Palace, it was third time lucky after losing FA Cup finals in 1990 and 2016 — and a moment of glory fans will cherish forever.
Tottenham Hotspur end 17 years Trophy drought with Europa League win over Manchester United
Spurs clinched their first major trophy since 2008 defeating Manchester United 1-0 in UEFA Europa League Final. This was their first European Triumph since 1984. The 42nd minute goal from Brennan Johnson sealed the deal for the Spurs.
This also marked title for Spurs skipper Son Heung-min who joined the club 10 years ago and finally broke the curse to win the trophy. He also lost UCL 2019 final being at Spurs where they lost to Liverpool. Son now becomes the only South Korean skipper to win title in Europe.
Harry Kane lifts career’s first major trophy
English legend Harry Kane played over 700 professional matches. He built many legacies, shattered records, touched personal milestones, but had one thing short in his cabinet – a trophy. And the wait was finally over when Bayern bagged Bundesliga 2025 title. This was Harry Kane’s first title win in his legendary career.
Having left Spurs in 2023 , he joined Bayern in the same year.
Kane previously lost 6 finals, twice with England in UEFA European Championships (2021 and 2024) and 3 times with Tottenham Hotspur: once in the UEFA Champions League and twice in the EFL Cup.Even last season with serial winners Bayern, Kane finished trophyless as he lost the Supercup to Leipzig in his first game for the club and fell short in the Champions League and DFB Cup, before finishing third in the Bundesliga.
This time around, there was to be no disappointment for one of the world’s great strikers and Kane’s contribution to the Bayern cause during their successful 2024/25 Bundesliga run has been fundamental, with England’s record marksman the division’s top scorer this season with 25 goals and counting.
“It feels amazing, to be honest,” an elated Kane told bundesliga.com after Bayern’s 2-0 victory against Borussia Mönchengladbach, a week on from the Bavarian’s confirming their 33rd Bundesliga title win. “Obviously it’s been a long time coming and a lot of hard work throughout the season. I’m just proud, proud of the boys and proud that my family and kids are here,” Bayern’s No.9 continued. “It’s just a great feeling and I’m looking forward to enjoying the next weeks.”
Kane will now eye more titles staying at Bayern, with target on FIFA Club World Cup.
