Ranchi: A resolute defensive display combined with a moment of penalty-corner precision helped Shrachi Bengal Tigers secure a hard-fought 1–0 win over hosts Ranchi Royals in Match 8 of the Women’s Hero Hockey India League (HIL) 2025–26 at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astro Turf Hockey Stadium on Sunday.
Argentina defender Agustina Gorzelany struck the decisive blow in the 37th minute, converting from a penalty corner to hand the Tigers their second win of the season and lift them to second place on the points table.
Ranchi Royals, coming into the contest on the back of consecutive victories, started brightly and dictated the early tempo. Their midfield pressed aggressively, earning five penalty corners and seven circle entries in the opening quarter. However, Tigers’ goalkeeper Jennifer Rizzo stood tall, denying the hosts with a series of sharp interventions. At the other end, Bichu Devi Kharibam produced timely saves to keep the scores level in a stop-start first quarter.
The second quarter saw Shrachi Bengal Tigers grow in confidence. They attacked in waves, registering seven circle penetrations and forcing a couple of penalty corners. Ranchi’s resistance was anchored by Madhuri Kindo, whose crucial saves ensured the teams went into halftime locked at 0–0.
The breakthrough finally arrived early in the third quarter. Gorzelany made no mistake from the set-piece, firing home her fourth goal of the season to put the visitors ahead. Ranchi Royals pushed for an immediate response but were met by a compact, disciplined Tigers’ backline that absorbed pressure and limited clear chances.
In a tense final quarter, the hosts dominated possession and launched a sustained search for the equaliser, carving out seven circle entries and five penalty corners. Yet, Shrachi Bengal Tigers remained rock-solid at the back, seeing out the contest to collect three valuable points.
