Paris : Indian 21 years old Aman Sehrawat has become the youngest ever Indian Athlete to win a Medal in Olympics.
The youngster defeated Puerto Rican wrestler Darian Cruz 13-5 in Wrestling – Men’s 57 Kg in Bronze medal match to gift India their 6th medal in Paris Olympics 2024.
Aman dominated the final match completely especially from the middle phase.
Cruz secured the 1st point by forcing Aman out of the playing area. However, Aman quickly responded, earned 2 points, locking Cruz’s leg & flipping him. The 2 wrestlers exchanged points, each flipping the other in rapid succession, with Aman leading 4-3 at 30 seconds break.
Aman started the 2nd half strongly, immediately locking Cruz to gain a 3 points advantage. With nearly 2 minutes left, Cruz required medical attention due to discomfort after Aman scored 2 more technical points. Aman capitalized on Cruz’s injury, gaining 2 more technical points to extend his lead to 10-5. He eventually clinched commanding 13-5 victory, thereby, winning Bronze Medal.
He had a dream debut journey in this Paris Olympics 2024. He started off with 10-0 victory against North Macedonian Vladimir Egorov in Round of 16 & 12-0 win against Albania’s Zelimkhan Abakanov in the quarterfinals. However, he lost to Japan’s Rei Higuchi 10-0 in Semifinal, thereby, qualifying in Bronze Medal match against Cruz.
With this win Aman joined the elite list of Indian Wrestling medal winners in Olympics with likes of KD Jadhav (bronze in 1952), Sushil Kumar (bronze in 2008 and silver in 2012), Yogeshwar Dutt (bronze in 2012), Sakshi Malik (bronze in 2016), Bajrang Punia (bronze in 2020) and Ravi Dahiya (2020). He’s the youngest Indian to win an Olympic medal now.
