Kolkata: Manchester United have reportedly started early and informal discussions with some familiar names as they hunt for an interim manager following the sacking of head coach Ruben Amorim earlier this week.
Sources close to the club say former United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and ex-midfielder Michael Carrick are among the few names that are being considered for a short-term role. Another option on the table is Ruud van Nistelrooy, who previously handled a brief four-match interim stint last season after Erik ten Hag was dismissed.
However, former United captain Wayne Rooney is not part of the discussions at this stage. For now, the club has placed under-18 coach Darren Fletcher in temporary charge. He will oversee Wednesday’s Premier League away match against Burnley and Sunday’s FA Cup third-round clash at home against Brighton & Hove Albion.
As per close sources, United’s senior management are keen to appoint an experienced interim manager who can steady the ship until the end of the season. The plan is to make a full-time appointment during the summer window. As part of this process, CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox have begun exploratory talks with potential candidates.
Solskjaer, who managed United for three years before being dismissed in November 2021, has already held informal conversations with the club. The Norwegian has been without a job since leaving Turkish side Besiktas in August.
Michael Carrick is also available after parting ways with Middlesbrough last summer. Carrick previously impressed during a short unbeaten run as interim manager in 2021 and remains a respected figure among United supporters.
With the season still alive in both domestic competitions, Manchester United will hope for quick clarity in the dugout as they attempt to regain stability and push for a strong finish.
