Mohali: At the end of the second day, Sri Lanka were 108/4, trail India by 466 runs. After India declared their first innings at 574 for eight on day two of the first Test on Saturday in Punjab Cricket Stadium.
For India, Ravindra Jadeja put a commendable all-around show and scored an unbeaten 175 as India declared their first innings for a mammoth total of 574. This was Jadeja’s second Test century, and also the highest by an Indian player batting at no. 7.
While Ravichandran Ashwin also played the perfect fifty to show his batting skills. Ashwin also took two wickets while Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah picked up a wicket each.
In response, Sri Lanka lost both the openers in the third and final session Ashwin removed Lahiru Thirimanne (17), and Jadeja plucked the wicket of Dimuth Karunaratne (28) put on 48 runs for the opening wicket. Then, Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Angelo Mathews on 22 as the visitors way past 100 in the 35th over. Ashwin came back to pick his second wicket of the day, removing Dhananjaya de Silva. Eventually, they ended Day 2 at 108/4.
On Day 1, Rishabh Pant scored a whirlwind 96 off just 97 balls after Hanuma Vihari had played a steady knock of 58. Virat Kohli, who is playing in his 100th Test, also looked solid and scored 45 runs during his stay at the crease, before Lasith Embuldeniya bowled Virat Kohli in the 44th over. For Sri Lanka, Suranga Lakmal, Vishwa Fernando and Lasith Embuldeniya took two wickets.
